From the classrooms of The Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School to positions of influence, leadership and national service

Western Chapter 2026

On 4 July 2026, the Western Chapter of the Mukumu Girls Alumnae Association conducted a mentorship session at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School as part of its commitment to supporting students' academic excellence and personal development. The session brought together nine alumnae, who mentored approximately 2,000 students from Grade 10, Form 3, and Form 4. Working closely with the school's Guidance and Counselling Department, the mentorship addressed key issues affecting learners, including academic performance, peer pressure, mob psychology, and the influence of parenting on students' behaviour and decision-making. The session aimed to equip students with practical knowledge, positive values, and life skills to help them make informed choices, enhance their academic performance, and navigate the social challenges they encounter both within and outside the school environment.

Keynote Address: Shaping Positive Behaviour and Future Success

The session addressed the growing concern of school unrest and the destruction of school property, drawing lessons from the Kyanguli Secondary School fire tragedy of 2001, in which 67 students lost their lives, and the more recent unrest at Utumishi Girls Academy. The facilitator emphasized the severe legal and personal consequences of participating in such acts, noting that individuals convicted in connection with the Kyanguli incident are serving life imprisonment, permanently limiting their freedom and future opportunities. The discussion further explored the influence of peer pressure and mob psychology in shaping students' behaviour, highlighting the importance of making independent and responsible decisions rather than following the crowd. Students were also encouraged to cultivate positive relationships with their parents and teachers, who play a critical role in providing guidance and support. To reinforce these messages, the facilitator drew on the Law of Compensation and the Rule of the Future, emphasizing that the choices students make today have lasting consequences for their education, character, and future aspirations. The session encouraged learners to remain focused on their goals, exercise sound judgment, and resist negative influences that could derail their future.

Interactive Discussion: Identifying Challenges Affecting Students

This interactive session provided students with an opportunity to openly identify and discuss the challenges affecting their academic performance, personal well-being, and overall school experience. Guided by the alumnae, the students reflected on the factors that hinder their ability to achieve their full potential and shared their perspectives in a safe and supportive environment.
